Often, I see clients in the waiting room area waiting to be attended by the doctor or the psychologist. I think to myself, what if I was among them? What would be my expectations from the professional I am going to visit? I have put my money and more importantly my faith in her. Will it really help visiting a psychologist? Will she give me the same lecture as my mom gave me the other day when I spoke to her about my problem? Does she even know her subject well?

By thinking from the client’s perspective, two things occur:

  • It generates empathy and compassion – two very essential aspects of therapy
  • Knowledge that the psychologist understands you, goes a long way to developing therapeutic alliance – a highly essential condition for successful therapy process and outcome

A successful psychologist is one who is able to achieve a good rapport or as mentioned earlier – a sound therapeutic alliance with her clients. Such an alliance establishes trust among both parties. Trust enables the clients to respect the psychologists and her words, establish faith in the therapy process, develops a motivation to follow and apply learnings from therapy as well as bring about trust in their own abilities to help themselves. Therefore, today I will tell you what to look for while shopping for a psychologist.

To choose a psychologist, look for:

  • Comments on her work
  • Read about her qualifications and the work she has done

Once you decide to engage with her, then look out for the following.

  • Empathy and genuineness
  • Gives you positive regard
  • Punctual
  • Knowledgeable
  • Responsible
  • Keeps your records updated
  • Motivates you to complete therapy assignments
  • Finds answers to your questions
  • Keeps herself updated

At the same time, it will help a client to have the following qualities.

  • Willingness to try therapy
  • Willingness to work hard on yourself and know that you are responsible for the success or failure of your therapy
  • The ability to give yourself totally in the hands of the therapist
  • Ask questions if you are unable to understand something
  • Take active part in the therapy process – tell your goals and the outcomes you wish to achieve from therapy
  • Know that therapists are humans and can make mistakes
  • Understand that therapists work hard on themselves to always look cheerful to you even when they’re having a thunderstorm of emotions inside

So, what are you waiting for? Do not dwell in misery. Psychological problems are real and you need not be ashamed about them. Call a psychologist right away!!
